For any pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air rifle owner, one question always comes to mind: “How can I get more shots per fill?” A higher shot count means more uninterrupted time on the range, more follow-up opportunities in the field, and less time tethered to a compressor or scuba tank. Maximizing your PCP air rifle shot count isn’t about a single secret trick; it’s about understanding how your rifle uses air and making smart adjustments to improve its efficiency. This is a practical skill for every adult shooter (18+) who enjoys the sport. Remember to always practice safe gun handling: treat every airgun as if it were loaded, always wear proper eye protection, and be certain of your target and what lies beyond it.

Understanding the Power Curve

The key to air management in an unregulated PCP rifle is the “bell curve.” This describes the relationship between the pressure in the air cylinder and the velocity of the projectile. It’s not a straight line. When you shoot a string of shots from a full cylinder, you’ll typically observe three phases:

  • The Climb: The first few shots after a maximum fill might actually be slower than the ones that follow. As the pressure drops slightly, it reaches a point where the valve system operates most efficiently, and velocities begin to climb.
  • The Plateau (or “Sweet Spot”): This is the ideal operating range. For a series of shots, the velocity will remain very consistent, varying by only a few feet per second (fps). This is where your rifle is most accurate because the trajectory is predictable from one shot to the next.
  • The Drop-Off: Once the cylinder pressure falls below the sweet spot, the valve doesn’t receive enough pressure to maintain velocity. The speed of the projectile begins to drop with each subsequent shot, and your point of impact will start falling lower on the target.

The goal isn’t just to get the most shots possible, but to get the most shots within that consistent plateau.

Regulated vs. Unregulated Rifles

Your rifle’s design plays the biggest role in its shot count potential. An unregulated rifle, as described above, exposes you directly to the bell curve. Tuning it involves finding that sweet spot through testing and learning not to fill the cylinder all the way to its maximum pressure, but rather to the pressure that starts the plateau. You then shoot until the velocity starts to drop off, and then you refill.

A regulated rifle, like the Northtac QILIN BP, changes the game. A regulator is a small, internal device that sits between the main air cylinder and the firing valve. It takes high-pressure air from the cylinder and delivers a precise, consistent, and lower amount of pressure to the valve for every single shot. This effectively eliminates the bell curve, creating a very long, flat plateau of consistent velocities. As long as the pressure in the main cylinder is higher than the regulator’s set pressure, your shots will be remarkably consistent. This dramatically increases the number of usable, accurate shots per fill.

Practical Tips to Increase Your Shot Count

Whether your rifle is regulated or not, you can make adjustments to trade a little bit of power for a significant gain in shots.

  • Adjust Hammer Spring Tension: This is the most common tuning method. The hammer spring controls how hard the hammer strikes the firing valve. A lighter strike opens the valve for a shorter duration, using less air. This reduces projectile velocity but can drastically increase your shot count. If you’re just punching paper at 50 yards, you don’t need maximum power. Backing off the hammer spring until you have just enough power for your needs is the number one way to improve air efficiency.
  • Select the Right Ammunition: Heavier pellets and slugs require more air to push them to an effective speed. If you don’t need the high energy of a heavy projectile, switching to a lighter-weight pellet that your barrel still shoots accurately can yield more shots per fill. Experimentation is crucial, so it pays to test a variety of pellets and slugs.
  • Use a Chronograph: You cannot effectively tune a PCP without a chronograph. This device is the only way to see what’s actually happening with your velocity. It allows you to identify the sweet spot on an unregulated rifle and see the real-world effects of your hammer spring and other adjustments.
  • Check for Leaks: A tiny, slow leak is a shot count killer. If your rifle seems to lose pressure while sitting for a day or two, you have a leak. Check the O-rings on your fill probe, the breech seal, and around the pressure gauge. This simple maintenance can bring a rifle right back to its full potential.
