The Myth of “Longer is Better”

In the world of shooting, there’s a long-held belief that a longer barrel equals a more accurate rifle. This idea often comes from the firearm world, where a longer barrel can mean a longer sight radius for iron sights and more time for gunpowder to burn for maximum velocity. But when we talk about modern Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) air rifles, the question of air rifle barrel length and its effect on accuracy becomes much more nuanced. The short answer is: no, a longer barrel is not inherently more accurate. The truth lies in quality, harmonics, and the overall system tune.

Before we dive in, a quick safety reminder: Always wear proper eye protection when shooting. Be certain of your target and what is behind it. Treat every airgun as if it were loaded, and remember that high-power airguns are for adults 18 and over. Always check your local laws and regulations.

Factors That Outweigh Barrel Length

A high-quality, 16-inch barrel will almost always outshoot a poorly made 28-inch barrel. For PCP shooters using optics, the old “sight radius” argument is irrelevant. Instead, accuracy is a product of consistency. The following factors have a much greater impact on your group size than length alone.

Barrel Quality and Craftsmanship

This is the single most important factor. A truly accurate barrel must be dimensionally perfect from breech to muzzle. Key features include:

  • The Crown: The very last surface the projectile touches as it exits the barrel. Any imperfection, nick, or burr on the crown will disrupt the projectile’s flight and ruin accuracy. It must be perfectly concentric and smooth.
  • The Rifling: The lands and grooves must be smooth, consistent, and free of machining marks. Any tight or loose spots along the bore will affect the pellet or slug inconsistently.
  • The Choke: Many airgun barrels have a slight constriction, or “choke,” near the muzzle. This helps to finally size the projectile and ensure a snug fit just before it exits, which can improve accuracy with certain diabolo pellets. The quality of the choke is critical.

Barrel Harmonics and Stiffness

When you fire your rifle, the burst of air creates a shockwave that causes the barrel to vibrate, or “whip,” in a complex pattern. This is called barrel harmonics. For maximum accuracy, the projectile must exit the muzzle at the exact same point in the vibration cycle every single time. Shorter, thicker barrels are inherently stiffer than longer, thinner barrels. This stiffness means they vibrate with less amplitude (less whip) and at a higher frequency, which can make them less sensitive to minor changes and easier to tune. Long barrels can be just as accurate, but they often require barrel bands or tensioning systems to tame their harmonics.

Velocity and Projectile Stability

The main job of the barrel is to provide a sealed tube for compressed air to accelerate the projectile. A longer barrel allows that air to act on the pellet or slug for a longer duration, which can produce higher velocity—up to a point. Once the projectile’s acceleration from the air pulse equals the deceleration from friction, a longer barrel provides no further velocity gain. More importantly, maximum velocity does not equal maximum accuracy. Every projectile has a speed at which it is most stable. Pushing a pellet too fast can cause it to become unstable in flight. The key is finding the right “velocity node” for your specific barrel. Sometimes a shorter barrel that produces a lower, more stable velocity will be far more accurate than a longer barrel that pushes the same projectile past its stability threshold. This is why testing various pellets and slugs at different power settings is so vital.

The Verdict: It’s About Balance, Not Length

So, does air rifle barrel length matter? Yes, but it’s a matter of purpose and balance, not a direct measure of accuracy potential. Choose a barrel length based on your needs:

  • Longer Barrels: Offer higher velocity potential, making them a good choice for launching heavy slugs at long ranges. They can also be quieter as they give the air more volume to expand.
  • Shorter Barrels: Provide a stiffer, lighter, and more maneuverable platform. This makes them ideal for hunting, pest control, and general field use where quick handling is an advantage.
